Post-harvest management is indeed the most overlooked lever of farm profitability

In Farming Community, farmers lose a significant part of their hard-earned produce after harvesting—due to poor storage, handling, grading, processing, and market linkage. While we invest heavily in increasing yield, we often ignore the fact that real value is created (and preserved) between harvest and the consumer.

Efficient post-harvest practices can:

Reduce quantitative and quality losses

Improve price realization through grading and aggregation

Enable access to better markets and export opportunities

Stabilize farmer incomes rather than keeping them dependent on volume alone

The shift must be from “how much we produce” to “how well we manage what we produce.”
Investment in cold chains, decentralized storage, value addition, and farmer-level awareness can unlock far more value than incremental yield improvements.

If farmers wants sustainable farm profitability, post-harvest management shouldn’t be the hidden half—it should be at the center of agricultural strategy.
